NOUNS  : Grammar lesson ( continued)

21.04.2020

Welcome   to  a  new day of learning!  Hope you enjoyed the previous lesson . Today , we move ahead and learn a little more about Nouns. 😊

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to :-

  •  identify  the different  types of nouns in a sentence
  •  recognize the difference between common and proper nouns.
  •  appreciate the use of common and proper nouns in our daily life.

We already know what nouns are . Well,  a noun  is a part  of  speech  that   names   people, places , things or ideas.  So today, let's focus on the types of nouns .

The image below shows the four kinds of nouns.

NOTE !    There are other types of nouns as well,  like material nouns , concrete nounscountable and uncountable nouns . We cover them later , in our subsequent lessons.

Now,  let's enjoy the video given below. 😀

Take a  look at the following words:-    town            &    doctor

The word, town , refers to a place   ;
while    the word,  doctor, refers to a person.  Such words are termed as Common nouns .  Common nouns are nouns that refer to people, places or  things  in general.

Proper nouns  on the other hand, refer to  specific people,  places and things.

So, how do we tell a common noun from a proper noun?  💭💭

Well, proper nouns  begin with capital letters to help them stand out in a sentence.  On the other hand, common nouns do not begin with capital letters , unless it is used to begin a sentence.

Let's observe the following examples:-

Example 1 . :-       St. Mary's High School has  two new teachers.

Here,    'St. Mary's High School'  is a proper noun   ( its a specific name given to a school )    and       ' teachers '  is  a common noun.

Example  2  :-       Mountains have steep sides and  peaks.  Mt. Everest is the tallest in the world.

Here, ' Mt. Everest '  is a proper noun  , while  'mountain  is a common noun as it refers to mountains ( high lands) in general .

Hope this was easy to grasp my little ones!😊👦👦
